Yushi Yashima

Our daily lives can be thought of as a world that, taking out the symbolized, surface images, is constructed by a processed and edited identity. This work is a film work that was joined together by asking a Shinto priest, a firefighter, a female store manager, and a Buddhist priest some questions and editing their answers. The video, which shows only bust shots and not the people’s faces, connects together only the words that don’t become words – conjunctions and interjections like “Er,” “Umm,” “Well,” and “Yeah,” – and projects the anonymous person from the enumeration of words that are at first glance meaningless. You could say this is extracting the surface field that people have, where people sense that person’s “identity” from their unclear word fragments as well.

　私たちの日常は、象徴化された表層のイメージを抜き取り、加工や編集された「～らしさ」によって構築された世界だと考えることができる。この作品は、〈神主〉〈消防士〉〈商店経営の女性〉〈住職〉などに質問を投げ、その回答を編集によって繋ぎ合わせた映像作品である。顔が映らないバス トショットで切り抜かれた映像は、「えー」「うーん」「そぅ」といった接続詞や間投詞などの言葉にならない言葉だけを繋ぎ、一見無意味な言葉の羅列から匿名的な個人を写し出す。それは明確でない言葉の断片からも〈その人物（らしさ）〉を知覚してしまう人物の持つ表面的な輪郭を抽出することである。
